BABA Activity in Bangladesh
Computer lab in the Ghoraghat R C Girls High School
In 2006, Eric Shishir Rahman, a dedicated BABA volunteer, approached several BABA members and volunteers in order to raise money to build a computer lab for an all-girl's high school in a remote place in Bangladesh:
Ghoraghat R C Girls High School
Post : Ghoraghat
Thana : Ghoraghat
Dist : Dinajpur
Bangladesh.
Even though Shishir barely got any donations from local members, he was able to convince a generous non-Bay Area BABA contributor, Shafiq Rahman, MD, to make this happen.
The BABA team members Ahmedur Rahman (Dhaka, Bangladesh), Naimul Hasan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Mohammed Al Mamun (New York), purchased and delivered two new computers and a printer to the school on July 2, 2006.
Internet Access to Ghoraghat R C Girls High School
You are aware that BABA has already helped build a computer lab for an all-girl's high school in a remote place in Bangladesh [Figure 1]. Unfortunately there is no phone line in the school yet. Ghoraghat has just installed a PBX for the first time. BABA donated money to get the phone line installed so that 400 students can get access to Internet for the first time in their lives!!
The BABA team member Ahmedur Rahman (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Naimul Hasan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) have been working with the school official, Mr. A. Mazid to install the phone line. In July 2007, the school has applied for the BTTB Internet line with following expenses:
Telephone + Internet connection fee total = Taka 2900. (One time)
Monthly minimum telephone charge = Taka 150
Monthly Internet usage charge = Taka 400 (unlimited access)

The BABA team members Ahmedur Rahman (Dhaka, Bangladesh), Naimul Hasan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and Monirul Haque (New York) are in the process of building the second Computer Lab. The plan is to complete this lab by September 2007. When completed this Lab would provide computer access to 854 boys and girls!!
Unfortunately there is no phone line in this school either. The current plan is to get the mobile phone connection for Internet access. The largest mobile telephone company of Bangladesh, Grameenphone provides the Internet access with the following cost:
Monthly line rent: Taka150.
Unlimited Internet access for monthly fee: Taka 1000
